Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is a branch of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that attempts to simulate a "human like" tutoring capabilities. The term "intelligent" refers to a system with the ability to know what to teach, when to teach and how to teach.Such a tutoring system can be effective because it can respond to the specific needs of student, guide slow learners, challenge rapid learners and monitor the progress of each student as well as establishing a training plan.ITS have the ability to understand, learn, and solve problems just like the human counterpart. To date education trend is geering towards Web-based education. However, Web-based education is still in the early development stage and most of the base education. However, Web-based education is still in the early development stage and most of the courses offered does not contain intelligent capability in real sense. This paper discusses the state of the art of Web-based Intelligent Tutoring System and suggests way to enhance the current Web-based ITSs

Recent years have witnessed the deployment of thousands of web-based educational systems on the World Wide Web (WWW).However, majority of the systems consist of static hypertext pages that are non-interactive and non-adaptive.The challenge is to develop an advance web-based educational system integrating intelligent agent that offers interactivity and adaptability.Intelligent agent is a new class of software or 'SOFT ROBOT' that acts on behalf of the user by performing special task such as filtering email, negotiating for services, automating complex tasks, scheduling appointment, finding and filtering information and making travel arrangement.Intelligent agent has been predicted to be the most important computer paradigm in the next ten years.By the year 2000 every significance application would have some form of agent functionality. One of the most promising research areas for intelligent agent is education and training.Such an agent can be used specifically to support and guide interaction between the student and the system. This agent is referred to as pedagogical agent.Pedagogical agent is an autonomous agent that acts as virtual tutors or teacher to create rich, face to face learning interactions. It can also be represented as animated characters to make the learning process more lively and appealing.Animated pedagogical agent offers great promise for broadening the bandwidth of tutorial communication and increasing the ability of learning environment to engage and motivate students. This paper described PEAGENT, an interactive and adaptive web-based educational system integrating four animated pedagogical agents that communicate in Malay language and perform various pedagogical functions

Keberkesanan pemberian pembayang menggunakan agen pedagogi beranimasi dalam sistem latihan berasaskan web

    Get PDF

Verifying on-line handwritten signature using neural networks approach

    Get PDF
Signatures are used everyday to authorize the transfer of funds for bank cheques, credit cards, legal documents and others. Forgeries on banking and business transactions amount to a large sum of money every year. Although the cashier sometimes can spot the forgeries, it is not cost effective to check the forgeries manually. Hence, automated verification is available, this will certainly benefit the customers and promote Electronic Commerce. Thus handwritten signature verification system can play an important role in future reading system (Bartneck, 1996).It is a worthy and challenging area of further investigation (Cote et, al, 1998). This paper discusses the neural network models and thus identifies suitable model for on-line Handwritten Signature Verification. Such a model is implemented and the performance of the neural network model is evaluated

Spring back of thick curved uni-directional carbon fibre reinforced composite laminate for aircraft structure application

Spring-back phenomena of a CFRP part takes place after it has gone through a high temperature cure cycle inside an autoclave. These phenomena have caused quality concerns for aerospace part manufacturers due to the part being out-of-tolerance for surface profile. This paper presents the results of the measurement and analysis of thick curved laminates, which are representative of the actual aircraft parts such as the main ribs of an outboard flap. It is a continuation from the previous work with results for flat uni-directional laminates. Curved laminates with sizes of 300mm, 400mm, and 500mm, corner angles of 30°, 45°, and 90°, and thicknesses of 20, 24, and 28 layers were manufactured. The spring-back effect was measured using a 3D scanner to obtain accurate measurements. Within the range of specimen studied in this work, the spring-back value increases with an increment in size. However, for the remaining two factors (thickness and corner angle), the value decreases

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Center (UKMMC) started neurointerventional service in August 2008. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the immediate and short term outcome of endovascular treatment (EVT) of cerebral aneurysm during early period of the services. A retrospective study for cerebral aneurysm treated by endovascular technique, from the Neurosurgical and Radiology Department from September 2008 till February 2010 was performed. Patient's demographic data, initial clinical presentation and assessment of the aneurysm were performed. The immediate results and short term assessment post EVT were evaluated based on standard criteria. Recurrence and complications during and following EVT procedures, were recorded. Twenty one patients with total of 22 aneurysms were treated. The mean age was 54.52 years with 57 being males and 43 females. The majority (81) had single aneurysm. The most common site was anterior communicating artery (28 ). Mean aneurysm sac size was 6.19 mm and 2.55 mm for aneurysm neck. At follow-up, 3 (27.2) had a small residual neck. Four patients (37.2) had residual aneurysm filling, but three of them were treated with stent aiming to achieve flow diversion effect instead of complete occlusion during initial treatment. There was no rebleed or rupture from the immediate to follow-up. Significant complications up to 30-days was observed in 4 patients (20) whereby 2 patients showed improvement and 2 patients died (10 mortality rate). Endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms performed in our centre had early outcome, morbidity and mortality compared to other higher volume centres. Longer term follow up is needed to evaluate the long termoutcome/occlusion rate, morbidity and mortality
